I was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and, like many others at the time, came to live and work in the UK in search of a better life and freedom from oppression.
Educated to O levels, further education included diplomas in business management, and advanced bookkeeping and finance. Early years in employment were within the family retail business. A move to a lithographic production facility allowed the completion of a trade qualification in pre-press origination for litho, screen print and cinema.
This subsequently let to joining one of South Africa's largest film distributors, Ster Kinekor, and culminated in gaining a key position at The Star, Johannesburg's leading daily newspaper, working in direct retail advertising as a major client account manager, producing copy and working with the 'in-house' creative team.
Following a number of years in print and publicity, I moved into sales and marketing, gaining a position with a leading residential property marketing company. As a top achiever, I soon gained recognition with entry into the company's 'Millionaire Club' at the annual awards ceremony.
Career training continued with intensive Sales, marketing and negotiating courses.
In 1974, I founded HWA to cater for the needs of direct retail advertisers that had 'outgrown' the newspapers' direct service departments but weren't yet substantial enough to interest the major ad agencies. We provided fast-moving and original creative and production work whilst maintaining a competitive advantage by keeping all services in-house. The business flourished until the unstable political situation brought about a rapid decline to most businesses in the mid 80's. With the future uncertain and a young family, we decided to move to the UK.
After an initial period developing business for a West End agency, I founded Presentation Solutions Limited, creative presentation and corporate communication specialists. The company grew over the next 11 years, working with large corporates, institutions, charities, banks and financial institutions, charted accountants and chartered surveyors, health and fitness organisations, retailers and others. During this time, I completed my Diploma in Company Direction, accredited by examination by the Institute of Directors, London.
I now provide services as a consultant and freelance project manager and over the past 7 years have developed my web marketing and graphic design skills to a high level through the completion of several training courses.
